As people taking the shleter/ashraya of Srila Prabhupada, we are representatives of the greater Gaudiya Sampradaya, its acharyas and their representation of vedic cultural principles.
The kirtan culture established by our acaryas must be understood before making alterations. Until then, we should just follow closely the formula established by Srila Prabhupada. Otherwise, the changes we make will not be made in knowledge.
It is over-simplistic to say, just do kirtan any way you can and it is perfect. It is good to do Krsna kirtan, it is better to do it according to rules and regulations outlined in shastra and expounded by our acaryas and best is to understand and realize the underlying principles involved and then make informed adjustments to most effectively communicate and embody those principles according to the current situation.
Our acaryas have given cultural and musical traditions, which are widely ignored in the international Gaudiya-Vaisnava communities. I have been studying them for many years now and can say that there is much value in them, which deserves consideration before we decide, based on the individual or cultural identities we have acquired, what we prefer and like for kirtan. We are here to represent a higher path of grace and make ourselves into fit instruments for IT, not the other way around.
Param vijayate Sri Krsna Sangkirtanam!
