Online lessons can be especially helpful for those who have attended one of the introductory mridanga workshops (Sacred Rhythm: The Mridanga Tradition).
We can focus on areas where there are additional questions or interest, while we refine your practice and work towards spontaneous improvisation.
For others, who have not attended one of my introductory workshops, we will likely need to take some time for orientation. Sharing a common understanding and a set of terminology allows us to frame your personal goals and then a suitable practice schedule going forward.
Private Lessons:
These one on one lessons allow for even the most detailed inquiry and personal adjustment, all increasingly informed and guided by the respect and trust such a setting can foster. This is seva. I love what I do and am here to support each unique goal and learning process.
Group Lessons: (3 people minimum)
If you have a group with compatible interests and/or skill level, you can all take lessons together.
Subjects:
Tāla Samskriti:
Rhythmic compositional structure, taught as a yoga-sādhana (means of executing yoga) and an efficient method of musical composition based in Ṛg Veda, Bhāgavata-Purāṇa, Nāṭya Śāstra, Vedangas etc.
This study is an integral part of what I teach to all Mṛdaṇga students. However, I do teach it separately as well.
It’s necessary for all those who love to offer kirtan – singers, dancers and instrument players. It is tāla which provides the common field ground for group coordination.
Mṛdaṇga Vādya:
mastery of the rhythmic sense, spoken language and playing technique employed in Mṛdaṇga instrumental musicianship.
दक्षिणा dakshiṇā – payment for services
In this tradition, dakshiṇā or a donation for services rendered, is given by the shishya or student to the adhyāpaka or teacher to acknowledge the value received and as well support the teacher’s ability to render teaching services.
Students must give dakshina, as it is appropriate for their circumstance.
